Roof Restoration Appeal

Hammerbeams, Heritage and Health – Restoration at St John the Baptist, Badingham

St John the Baptist Church in Badingham is Suffolk’s most at-risk church. Thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the rare hammerbeam roof will be restored alongside the development of a community activities plan that will shape the future of the role of the church for the community of Badingham and for the people of Suffolk and beyond.

You are invited to have your say about how you’d like the church to be used for activities in the future and share your views on local history and heritage. We would like as many people as possible to fill in this SURVEY. For more details about the survey, contact miri.birch@flyinggeese.co.uk

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Currently the church roof is being held up by scaffolding. Without repair, the hammerbeam roof will fall down and our church will be lost forever. Our church roof is considered to be of international importance. Let's 'raise the roof' and preserve our historic church for us and future generations.

We need to raise £22,000 by March 2026 as our contribution to receive lottery funding. Without raising this sum, we won't get funding for the next phase.

Please give generously! Contactless Giving in the church, or make a donation via bank trasfer:

Update December 2025

The Diocesan Advisory Committee has in principal approved the issue of the roof repair (the Faculty), subject to some technical queries being answered. Our architect team is working on these at the moment and expect to have the queries answered within the next 2 - 3 weeks. After that, the Diocese will issue the Faculty, which is the church equivalent of planning permission. This allows us to carry out the repairs but doesn't provide the money to do it. That will come from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and a number of other benefactors, to whom we are applying at the moment. As part of the fund-raising and in response to suggestions from the Activity Consultant surveys that were completed, we are hoping to have another talk in the village hall. This will probably by in February and be given by Dr Sarah Cassell, who will talk about the Angel Roofs in Suffolk Churches. Badingham Church has some painted angels which were installed when the hammer beam roof was erected some 500 years ago. Look out for more details, which we will publicise as soon as we have them. As always, thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund for their support.

On behalf of Badingham Parochial Church Council

A huge thank you to the many people who help to support and work to keep our lovely village church alive and in good order in so many ways and to everyone who is working on our Heritage Lottery application. Yes, we have a roof to mend, but with everyone’s prayers and efforts, we will, hopefully, get there, even if it takes a while
