Roof Restoration Appeal

Hammerbeams, Heritage and Health – Restoration at St John the Baptist, Badingham

St John the Baptist Church in Badingham is Suffolk’s most at-risk church. Thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the rare hammerbeam roof will be restored alongside the development of a community activities plan that will shape the future of the role of the church for the community of Badingham and for the people of Suffolk and beyond.

You are invited to have your say about how you’d like the church to be used for activities in the future and share your views on local history and heritage. We would like as many people as possible to fill in this SURVEY. For more details about the survey, contact miri.birch@flyinggeese.co.uk

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Currently the church roof is being held up by scaffolding. Without repair, the hammerbeam roof will fall down and our church will be lost forever. Our church roof is considered to be of international importance. Let's 'raise the roof' and preserve our historic church for us and future generations.

We need to raise £22,000 by March 2026 as our contribution to receive lottery funding. Without raising this sum, we won't get funding for the next phase.

Please give generously! Contactless Giving in the church, or make a donation via bank trasfer:

Update February 2026

We were delighted early in December to be told that the Heritage Fund had increased our Development Fund Grant by £38,693 which will enable us to engage a fund-raising consultant, who will help us with grant applications, and a quantity surveyor. Both very necessary. They have also extended our Development Phase period and our aim is to submit our Delivery Phase Application by May 2026. Arising from the Activity Plan, we have had a report from Suffolk Wildlife Trust and hope to have a meeting with everyone involved in the churchyard maintenance (when the weather and conditions permit) to discuss the churchyard management from a natural history point of view. We are also arranging a talk on 'Angel Roof Churches in Suffolk', with a special reference to Badingham. This will be on Friday March 6th [see the community calendar for details]. As always, thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund and lottery players for their support.

On behalf of Badingham Parochial Church Council

A huge thank you to the many people who help to support and work to keep our lovely village church alive and in good order in so many ways and to everyone who is working on our Heritage Lottery application. Yes, we have a roof to mend, but with everyone’s prayers and efforts, we will, hopefully, get there, even if it takes a while
